Simple Ways to Solve Weight Problems in Teens

A common mistake that parents make is to allow their kids to eat as much as they want. Many parents dismiss their children's weight thinking that they'd lose it as soon as puberty sets in. However, not all children have the same metabolism. Some lose their baby weight quickly, while others suffer through it. What makes the problem worse is that some of the eating habits these children developed when they were children continue throughout their teens. The couch potato and online lifestyles teenagers have combined with their eating habits is a dangerous combination that inevitably leads to weight problems.

It's hard enough to be a teenager. Being an obese teenager makes it even harder. Spare your children from obesity by encouraging a healthy lifestyle in your own home. Here are a few tips on how to create an environment that promotes healthy living:

1. Make physical activity a family activity.
A physically active family is rarely an overweight family. One way to prevent your children from having weight problems is by creating a family culture of activity. Make it a family tradition to go jogging at the park, swimming at the clubhouse, or working out at the gym. Make it as fun as you can. As long as you have an enthusiastic attitude towards physical activity, your children will develop a liking for it as well. If you create a culture of healthy living, your children will develop the right habits that can keep them healthy all their lives.

2. Use smaller plates at home.
It is a well-known fact that smaller plates can help control the amount a person eats. Portion control is one of the most important tenets of a healthy diet. Incorporate this idea into your daily life by using small plates at home. Instead of trying to control what your child eats, try to control how much he or she eats instead. Eating too much food, regardless of how healthy it is, may eventually cause weight problems in your teens. Encourage healthy living and a healthy diet by training your children to eat controlled portions.

3. Turn off the computer/television.
Teenagers spend countless hours in front of the computer and the television. If left unchecked, your children may develop a sedentary lifestyle that could lead to weight problems and other detriments to their health. Resolve this situation before it becomes a problem. Discourage the excessive use of the computer and the television. Encourage healthy living by limiting the amount of time your children spend on these devices.

4. Make sure they drink enough water.
The saying "the best things in life are free" applies to healthy living as well. One of the most efficient ways to prevent weight problems in teens is to make sure that they're drinking enough water. Water cleanses the digestive tract and flushes out toxins that could impede the process of digestion. Furthermore, it has a tendency to reduce a person's appetite. Don't fill your fridge with sodas and juices with high sugar content. Establish a water-drinking habit in your children. Not only will it keep them healthy, it will keep them looking slim and fit as well.

5. Use alternative ingredients for their favorite meals.
Every person has a favorite meal. Unfortunately, many teenagers, partly because of the chemical changes happening in their bodies during puberty, tend to crave for fatty foods. They like fast food, burgers, pizza and burritos - foods that could eventually cause not only weight problems, but health problems as well. Telling them not to eat these types of food isn't going to work. So, instead of preventing them from eating these foods, prepare it for them with alternative ingredients. Encourage healthy living by serving vegetarian pizzas, fat-free burritos and organic mushroom burgers. Let your children know that food doesn't have to be unhealthy to taste good.

Weight problems are getting alarmingly common among teens. Parents need to make a conscious effort to promote healthy living in the home. Teens are quite impressionable. As long as parents are able to set a good example, the children will likely follow. Get your teens interested in the right activities. Expose them to different sports and outdoor activities to give them plenty of options to choose from. The health status of teens is a clear indication of a parent's parenting abilities. If your teen is overweight or unhealthy, it means you have to do a better job.
